Barcelona is awaiting the medical committee's decision on Ter Stegen, but has the option of obtaining the endorsement of a board member, which it has already used on other occasions.
FC Barcelona is awaiting a decision today or tomorrow from LaLiga's medical committee, which must determine whether Marc-André ter Stegen's injury is long-term and, therefore, allows the club to use a percentage of the German goalkeeper's generous salary to register Joan Garcia as a fair play option. If the committee determines that the goalkeeper's condition could leave him sidelined for five months or more, the club will be able to use 80% of his salary. If it's four months, the percentage will drop to 50%. And if the medical committee ultimately decides he'll be out for less than four months and breaks Barça's Plan A, there is a Plan B: the approval of the president and/or another member of the board of directors.
The club is awaiting an affirmative response from the commission regarding their thesis, which is that the duration of the injury will allow them to use part of Ter Stegen's salary to register Joan Garcia, the top priority in the registration process right now, given that the La Liga Championship begins next Saturday for Hansi Flick's team in Mallorca, and currently only Iñaki Peña is registered in LaLiga, who hasn't played a single minute in preseason and is not in the German coach's plans for this campaign.
In any case, if the response differs from FC Barcelona's predictions and interests, the club hasn't ruled out a final registration route, which has been used before: the personal endorsement of a board member. In fact, Barça already reassured Joan Garcia's agents by explaining this possibility at the end of July, as published by MD. Therefore, there is a plan B, although the club hopes not to have to use it.
It was already used with Koundé
In August 2022, when FC Barcelona signed Jules Koundé from Sevilla, there were also problems registering the Frenchman. He was then registered thanks to a personal guarantee from President Laporta and Treasurer Ferran Olivé. At that time, the amount was estimated at around eleven million euros. Months later, in January 2023, that guarantee was deactivated because Gerard Piqué's departure left room for salary to be used with Koundé.
