Barca did not create a lot but Girona were still indebted to goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga on the night.

The Argentine made first half saves from his own defender Santi Bueno, Raphinha and Ronald Araujo and a late, late stop from a Gavi header.

Prior to that Gavi save, Taty Castellanos had missed Girona's best chance to stun Barca in the Catalan derby.

Xavi wanted a reaction to the defeat to Real Madrid last week in the Copa del Rey semifinal and Barca did start quite well.

Robert Lewandowski and Ansu Fati both had early chances but Barca were far from their best against a solid Girona side.

The point is still one gained this week, though, after Madrid were beaten by Villarreal on Saturday at the Bernabeu.

Girona, meanwhile, move eight points clear of the bottom three as their impressive return to LaLiga continues.
