According to AS, Laporta will request more funds for the construction of the Spotify Camp Nou stadium. The Barcelona club plans to convene an extraordinary general meeting of members, as the previously approved €1.45 billion is no longer sufficient to complete the project.
The report states that the project was initially planned for full completion in September 2026, but the latest estimates indicate that the stadium's full capacity operation and complete roof installation will be delayed until the end of 2027.
Like most clubs and sports associations renovating or building new stadiums, Barcelona has experienced budget overruns and requires additional funding to complete the Spotify Camp Nou renovation project.
The Barcelona board, led by Laporta, intends to convene a special general meeting of members to seek approval for additional loans. Previously, Goldman Sachs, along with 20 investors, raised a total of €1.45 billion for the stadium renovation project, and the club now plans to secure further financing on top of this.
The exact amount of the overrun is currently unknown, but the budget shortfall for such large stadium projects typically ranges between €300 million and €400 million. Barcelona had previously stated that the rising prices of construction materials such as steel, cement, and aluminum, due to the global commodity inflation crisis, led to increased project costs, with the Russia-Ukraine situation being a major cause of this inflation.
In addition, the damage to the first and second tiers of the stadium stands was far greater than expected, and the associated repair work also increased expenses. At the same time, the project needs to comply with current modern building codes, which led to a significant increase in the amount of steel and concrete used in the original design, further raising the overall cost.
The €1.45 billion initially approved by members was the entire budget for the whole Barcelona Espai Barça project, with €960 million specifically allocated for the new stadium construction. This fund has now been exhausted, and the board must continue to raise funds to complete the project, with the specific additional amount yet to be determined.
In addition to the main stadium, surrounding facilities, office areas, a hotel, and the new Palau Blaugrana and Miniestadi are yet to be completed.
