It was a world record fee that Barcelona received for Neymar last summer but 222 million euros doesn't get close to covering the amount the club have splashed out since that fateful day.
At the top of the tree in spending over the same period, the Blaugrana sit above the 387m euros Manchester City have spent as well as that of Paris Saint-Germain (373m euros) and Liverpool (350m euros).
Most recently, Barcelona signed up Malcom for 41m euros plus a further 1m euro in add-ons after a rapid deal was cut with Bordeaux, despite the winger seeming set for Roma.
It adds to the 31m euros forked over for midfielder Arthur, with 9m euros in bonuses for the Brazilian, and the 39.5m euro release clause matched to sign Clement Lenglet from Sevilla to reach a bill of 107.9m euros this summer alone.
However even that is dwarfed by the club record signing of Philippe Coutinho, who cost 120m euros plus 40m euros in bonuses when signing from Liverpool in January, whereas Neymar's immediate replacement, Ousmane Dembele, arrived for 105m euros along with another 40m euros in variables.
In sum, the Azulgrana are committed to spending 90m euros in add-ons on top of their initial 384.7m euro splurge as they fill the gap left by Neymar, as well as other departing players.
Summer Sale
To account for this shopping spree, Barcelona are open to offers on a number of players having let Paulinho go on loan to Guangzhou Evergrande on the premise he moves back to China permanently via a 50m euro mandatory purchase clause.
Only Javier Mascherano, Cristian Tello and Gerard Deulofeu have left on permanent deals this summer to recoup a mere 22.5m euros. When added to Neymar's transfer fee, the Catalans have amassed 244.5m euros in sales since the winger's exit.
The hope is to top 350m euros by the time the window closes, given that Jasper Cillessen, Aleix Vidal, Yerry Mina, Andre Gomes, Rafinha, Munir El Haddadi, and a few others are all either wanting to leave the club or are up for sale.
That said, Andres Iniesta's departure at the end of last season may mean the spending isn't yet controlled, given the hope of a playmaker that has led them to pursue Aleksandr Golovin, Adrien Rabiot and Frenkie de Jong in recent weeks.

Undoubtedly Dembele is a good player but his purchase at the time was a panic reaction. We could have done exercised some tact

The funny thing is that they have asked for a loan to be able to pay Julio's payrolls. They are shooting themselves in the foot with the renovations every 6 months. In this aspect, Florentino is smart and the Madrid players know that there is a salary cap in the club.

Barça is on its way to relive the Gaspart era. Perhaps while Messi is not happening, it will happen. A club that no longer relies on the quarry, that no longer intimidates other rivals, that does not respect them in the transfer market, spends a lot and badly. The failure that comes is a fact, Busquets does not have a privileged physicist and his withdrawal along with Messi is the end of a cycle that was not used to the maximum because of some nefarious leaders in charge of the club.

Of the three above, Neymar was the least decisive, the one that had the worst numbers. Say that Barca lost nothing after his departure, quite the opposite, received 222 million with which he signed Dembelé (105 plus 40 in variables to pay in 5 years) and Coutinho (110 plus 40 in variables to pay in 5 years) . Let's say then that the investment has been quite minor.
