Bayern 2-2 Dortmund: Fábio scores late equalizer as Kane misses penalty in derby

Harry Kane missed a penalty in his first match since winning the Ballon d'Or, as Borussia Dortmund salvaged a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker.

Match Report

Kane, who displayed football's most prestigious individual award to the Allianz Arena crowd before kick-off, fired against the crossbar from the spot in the 56th minute, when Bayern were 1-0 up thanks to Konrad Laimer's strike.

Serhou Guirassy levelled for Dortmund before Dayot Upamecano restored Bayern's advantage, but with one minute of the 90 remaining, BVB substitute Fabio Silva drilled home to keep both teams unbeaten eight games into the Bundesliga season.

Bayern went agonisingly close to a 10th-minute opener as Michael Olise thumped an effort off Gregor Kobel's left-hand post, before Jonas Urbig was called into action by Jobe Bellingham at the other end.

Ismael Saibari passed up a big chance when his attempted lob was smothered by Kobel, and after colliding with the Dortmund goalkeeper in that incident, he became the first of three Bayern players to go off injured, with Serge Gnabry following soon afterwards.

It looked as though Bayern had gifted Dortmund the lead when Kim Min-jae's pass put Upamecano under pressure inside his own six-yard box, with Carney Chukwuemeka pouncing to dispossess him and Bellingham slotting home. However, a VAR review saw the goal disallowed, with Chukwuemeka deemed to have impeded Urbig.

And it was Laimer who struck first in the 38th minute, making no mistake on the rebound after his first shot was blocked by Kobel's foot.

Laimer was denied his brace by Kobel at the start of the second half, with Olise also firing wide on the swivel, before Kane passed up a glorious chance to make it 2-0. Felix Nmecha handled Kane's volley from a corner, but the England captain left the woodwork shaking from the resulting spot-kick.

Kane's miss kickstarted a chaotic period, with Guirassy levelling on the hour mark following some good work from Chukwuemeka, before Kane headed Joshua Kimmich's cross back into the danger zone to give Upamecano a 66th-minute tap-in.

Kane later struck the post, only for a delayed offside flag to spare his blushes, while he was also unable to guide a curling effort inside the same upright.

And, after Bayern saw Olise limp off in another concerning development, there was a late twist. Silva fired past Urbig after Aleksandar Pavlovic went down rather softly under Konstantinos Karetsas' challenge, though the hosts struck the woodwork again in stoppage time, through Lennart Karl's curler.

World's best endures rare off day

Kane's first game after being crowned the world's best player would've been a fitting one for him to make his mark, with Bayern and Dortmund level at the top of the table and boasting unbeaten records.

He wore a pair of custom white and gold boots to mark the occasion, but as it turned out, they did not bring him good luck.

Kane's missed penalty was just his second in the Bundesliga, in 27 attempts. His only previous unsuccessful spot-kick in the competition came in May, when he fired high over the crossbar against Wolfsburg.

Kane ended Saturday's Klassiker without a single shot on target, from six overall attempts – the second-most by any player without hitting the target in a Bundesliga game this season, after Hoffenheim's Fisnik Asllani had seven shots off target against Werder Bremen earlier in the day.

He still managed to register a goal involvement by assisting Upamecano, becoming the second player to reach 10 direct goal involvements in the Bundesliga this term (four goals, six assists, level with Antonio Nusa), but Bayern could not hold on for the win.
