Bayern 6-2 Freiburg: Hosts comeback in 8-goal thriller, Olise 5 goals & assists

  /  R47

Bayern Munich came from two goals down to beat Freiburg 6-2 at the Allianz Arena, extending the Bavarians' record of never losing any of their 26 home Bundesliga head-to-heads against Breisgau-Brasilianer.

Match Report

There was a quiet atmosphere in the early skirmishes, but the away end erupted in the 12th minute.

Freiburg had shown plenty of intent from the off and got their reward when Jan-Niklas Beste delivered a low corner that was flicked on by Matthias Ginter, setting the ball up perfectly for Yuito Suzuki to open the scoring.

The Bavarians were undone by another Beste corner just five minutes later, as Johan Manzambi rose above the red and white shirts to head past Manuel Neuer.

Bayern immediately stepped things up as they looked for a response that came through Lennart Karl, who recovered from sending a header over by expertly controlling Michael Olise’s fizzed pass and firing past Noah Atubolu.

Bayern continued to move the ball menacingly, while Julian Schuster’s side stood firm defensively and got forward whenever possible with Suzuki smashing an ambitious strike marginally off-target.

Bayern stepped up the pressure before the break, though, and that told in the second minute of stoppage time as Karl laid the ball off for Olise to hit a venomous strike that beat Atubolu despite the goalkeeper getting both hands to it.

Karl thought he had put the hosts ahead within seven minutes of the restart, but Josip Stanisic had strayed offside before teeing up the teenager.

Bayern didn’t have to wait too much longer for their goal, as Dayot Upamecano applied a clinical finish to Olise’s corner delivery.

The Bavarians looked imperious by the time they doubled their lead on the hour mark, when Harry Kane capitalised on a fortuitous bounce by powering his strike past Atubolu. Luis Diaz then danced through the box but sent his attempt agonisingly wide.

There was concern with Karl going off injured, but the goals didn’t stop as Nicolas Jackson replaced him and hit the back of the net just seven minutes later, finishing effortlessly after great work from Olise.

The Frenchman then capped off a brilliant afternoon’s work with a sensational strike, jinking inside and curling the ball out of Atubolu’s reach.

That saw Bayern get back to winning ways in style after drawing before the international break, recording the 17th victory from their 18 matches across all competitions this term.

In doing so, they also inflicted just the second defeat Freiburg have suffered in their last 14 competitive fixtures.
