Bayern Munich play with 12 players after Kathleen Kruger mistake: She won't have slept after error

In a bizarre set of circumstances, Bayern Munich were left with 12 players on the pitch for around 20 seconds towards the end of their 4-1 win against Freiburg.

Bayern Munich were already two goals ahead when the confusing scenario arose.

Niklas Sule came on to replace Corentin Tolisso, who was forced off through illness having himself come on as a substitute.

But, Sule appeared on the field before Kingsley Coman, who was substituted at the same time for Marcel Sabitzer, had been removed from the field, leaving Bayern Munich with 11 outfield players.

The cause of the confusion was the electronic boards because instead of Coman's No.11, the No.29 came up, a number that does not belong to any of the Bayern Munich players.

Bayern Munich's team manager Kathleen Kruger was in charge of ensuring the right players came on and off the pitch, a mistake which Bild journalist Christian Falk believes was not entirely her fault.

"I know her really, really well," said Falk. "She's really very meticulous. I don't think she slept at all tonight.

"She's not solely guilty, I would say. Actually, it is the job of the fourth official, he has to count."

Kruger has a great track record in Germany, receiving the Bavarian Order of Merit from Markus Soder, president of Bavaria, for her work in football.

Former Bayern Munich player Markus Babbel also thinks the fourth official was partly at fault for the incident.

"It is indisputable that Kathleen Kruger gave the wrong number," said Babbel. "But that can happen, it's human.

"What surprised me is that the fourth official let the players in so easily. This is a result of several errors. I find it complete nonsense to blame Kathleen alone."
