Bayern Worried About Alphonso Davies' Injuries and Mental State

Bild reports that Bayern is concerned about their star defender Alphonso Davies. After being eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals against PSG (4-5 in the first leg, 1-1 in the second leg), Davies suffered another muscle injury. Due to a hamstring injury in his left leg, he will miss the remainder of the season – and may even jeopardize his prospects of participating in this summer's World Cup (June 11 to July 19) with Canada.

Bayern's sporting director Freund said after Bayern's 1-0 away win against Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday: "It is of course very painful, especially for him, but also for us. He recovered well from a serious knee injury, but muscle injuries have plagued him again and again. He has never really found his rhythm. It's painful, and it's a difficult phase for him psychologically at the moment. But we will do our best to support him and hope he can return stable."

Freund was referring to Alphonso Davies tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament and suffering cartilage damage in March 2025. It took him nine months to recover. After returning in December, everything initially seemed to be back on track – but then there were three more setbacks: In February 2026, he suffered a torn muscle fiber in the back of his right leg. In his first game back on March 10 of the same year in the Champions League round of 16 first leg away against Atalanta (6-1), he suffered another thigh muscle strain. And now this left thigh injury is said to be a torn muscle bundle.

Coach Kompany said at the press conference after Saturday's win against Wolfsburg: "I'm not worried about the physical side. He will be back, everything will be fine. But psychologically, it's extremely difficult." Indeed! As early as May 2025, Alphonso Davies revealed in a video on his YouTube channel that he had experienced a mental breakdown during his recovery from the cruciate ligament tear. He confessed: "I had a mental breakdown at that time. I didn't know what was wrong with me. I suddenly burst into tears in the shower." After the game against Atalanta, he burst into tears on the spot.

Therefore, it is not without reason that Bayern is worried about Alphonso Davies's mental state after another major blow (including the end of the season and the uncertain World Cup prospects). Kompany explained: "Sometimes the hardest thing is not those serious injuries, but these recurrent minor injuries that can hit you psychologically extra hard."

The Bayern coach continued: "But okay, he has to quickly adjust his mentality now. Let's see what happens before the World Cup. There is no other way, we will help him and support him."
