Benfica boss Jorge Jesus is left bewildered after Haris Seferovic's shocking late miss at Barcelona

Benfica head coach Jorge Jesus described Haris Seferovic's horrendous last-gasp miss agains Barcelona in the Champions League as the worst he has seen in '30 years'.

The forward wasted a massive opportunity to hand Benfica a 1-0 lead over the Catalans and boost them into second place in Group E.

But the Switzerland international's tame effort on the counter-attack was toe-poked wide, leaving the Portuguese side with an uphill battle to make it to the knockout stages.

Benfica broke on the counter-attack in injury time and found themselves in a two-on-one situation. Darwin Nunez found substitute Seferovic in plenty of space near goal.

The Swiss striker did the difficult part as he jinked the ball over an onrushing Marc-Andre ter Stegen to find himself in front of an empty goal and a scrambling Barcelona defender in his wake.

But instead of breaking the Blaugrana's hearts, Seferovic steered the ball wide from a few yards out, leaving the game to end in a goalless stalemate.

On the sidelines Jesus fell to the ground in dismay at the howler and after the game the coach claimed he had never seen anything like it.

'In 30 years as a coach, I've never seen anything like this, but it happened,' Jesus told the CNN Portugal. 'To me and to Benfica.'

Instead of helping his side into second in the group one point ahead of Barcelona, Seferovic kept the Blaugrana's Champions League hopes alive as Xavi's first European game in charge sees the club inch closer to the last-16.

But despite the result, Jesus insisted he was proud of his side and although the odds are against them, he believed Benfica could progress.

'The team created opportunities, we left with a result that makes us dream [of advancing], it doesn't depend on us,' he said. 'We have a chance when there's only one game left. We're in the mix with Barcelona, ​​a team that aims to win the Champions League.

'This can only make us proud to the fans because the team behaved like a great team here.'

With one group game left, Benfica need to defeat Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich - who have already secured their spot in the last-16 - to keep alive any chance of progressing.

If they beat the German side and Barcelona fall to defeat at the hands of Dynamo Kiev, Benfica will make it through.

The Portuguese side could also squeeze through if they win and Barcelona draw as, in the event they are level on points, Benfica will emerge victorious on the basis of the head-to-head record which saw them beat the Catalans 3-0 on matchday two.
