Bergwijn: I want to be good player here and I want to win the UCL for Tottenham

Asked for a message for our fans after joining from PSV, the Dutch international looked down the camera and said: “It’s an honour for me to be here, a dream to play in the Premier League and I will give whatever I have, whatever I can bring, I will give it all for the Club and for this team.”

The winger brings a strong CV to Spurs at the age of 22 – three Eredivisie titles and 149 appearances for PSV, capped at all levels by the Netherlands, including nine at senior level and experience of Champions League football, where he played against us for PSV last season.

Asked about his first impressions of Tottenham last season, he smiled: “First of all, I loved to see that you beat Ajax (in the Champions League semi-final)! This a big club that plays good football and that’s what I like.

“It’s an amazing move for me, an amazing club,” he continued. “Just look around the training ground, it’s amazing. It’s an honour to be here. I just spoke to the manager as well. When I was a young boy I looked up to a coach like Jose Mourinho, now I play for him.”

Steven’s family joined him at Hotspur Way, his father Steven (‘Big Steven’, as he introduced himself), mother Bianca and brother Alejandro.

Family is big for Steven. “Without them, I’m not here,” he said.

Go back to 2011 and he made the switch from Ajax to PSV, Amsterdam to Eindhoven, about 80 miles south through Holland on the A2.

“I was 13 when I moved to PSV,” he recalled. “For four years, my father drove me to PSV. We woke up at six o’clock in the morning, drove one hour to Eindhoven, then back to school until three or four o’clock, every day. When I was training, my father would sleep in the car, all that for three or four years. I know what my family have done for me and I’m happy that I can give this back.”

As for his aims for the rest of the season, Steven added: “I look from day to day. I want to be a good player here, score goals, give assists. I want to win the Champions League. I watched last season, the team went so far, and I hope this season also.

“You have to believe in yourself. I know what I can bring to this club and to this team, that’s important. I will do what I can, and I know what I can do.”
