Jan Oblak made a sensational early save, but Atletico Madrid's 18-match unbeaten run in LaLiga came to an end with a defeat at Real Betis.
Match Event
65' Penalty Goal! Betis 1-0 Atletico (Canales)
A cross comes in from the left and it takes a touch off the head of Hernandez before making contact with Luis’ hands which were in an unnatural position! It leaves the referee with no option but to award Real Betis a penalty and a chance to take the lead!
Oblak guesses correctly but Canales hits the penalty with pace and power – beating the goalkeeper at the bottom-right corner!
Match Report
Atletico Madrid's LaLiga title hopes were dealt a huge blow as Sergio Canales' penalty claimed a 1-0 win for Real Betis on Sunday.
With LaLiga leaders Barcelona having drawn on Saturday, Atleti knew that a victory would have taken them to within three points of Ernesto Valverde's side.
But Atleti failed to make Barca pay for their slip up, and having been denied by a spectacular stop from Jan Oblak early on, Betis struck when Canales slotted home from 12 yards out in the 65th minute following Filipe Luis' handball.
Diego Simeone will likely point to debutant Alvaro Morata having had what looked to be a clear penalty claim turned down earlier in the second half, while Antoine Griezmann hit the woodwork, but that was the most Atleti could muster as they suffered their first LaLiga defeat since September.

it was never the case of CFC not playing Morata in his comfort zone or supplying him with enough chance, the guy gives up easily I hope he doesn't do same here after a shambolic performance from the whole team.. a player who jumps ship when things are not going well at a club can never revive a career. @ R.Madrid, @ Chelsea ..

Betis is sticking with the ball thus both teams don't really have the time to create some dangerous attacks, hope we can focus on finding the net as this match is so important for us, to close the gap between us and Barca

Worst game. How the fuck penalty was not given to the foul on Morata but on the unintentional handball of Luis? What’s the use of VAR if the team don’t even use their eyes to watch the match? The score line should be reversed definitely. And Betis only got like around 8 fouls meanwhile our players got fouled so many times. The whole referee team is terrible. Also the whole team was not like Atletico. Tons of high crosses and aerial balls for no reason. I guess it maybe adjusted to fit with Morata but not like this bro...It should be Morata to fit with us not our whole squad to change for him. Imo both teams played really bad today. But still this lost is underserved, as the penalty decision is TOTALLY ROBBERY.

Morata is not a complete 9, he doesn't have shooting precision. Yeah he's got skills but he'll always struggle to be the main man as a 9 unless he's being used as a super sub just like he was in Real Madrid playing second fiddle to Benzema
