According to Sport Bild, former Germany national team coach Nagelsmann is open to returning to his old club, RB Leipzig. If current Leipzig coach Martín Demichelis is unable to continue in his role, Nagelsmann is ready to take over.
The newspaper cited an informal exchange between the two parties, stating that Nagelsmann did not rule out Leipzig. So far, however, contact between the two has not reached a substantive stage.
That could change quickly. The report states that if Martín Demichelis cannot stabilize the team's inconsistent performances and results before Christmas, his position could come under threat.
In addition, Leipzig must be wary of Manchester United's interest in Nagelsmann. The 39-year-old is also a candidate for the long-struggling Premier League giants, should their under-pressure head coach Carrick be dismissed.
Media outlets including Sky Sports have previously reported this interest. However, Manchester United are reportedly also considering other candidates.
RB Leipzig: Nagelsmann's departure from the German national team was ill-timed
Nagelsmann's possible return to Leipzig may be linked to the unfortunate timing of his departure from the German national team, especially from Leipzig's perspective, as the club currently sits fourth in the Bundesliga.
On July 3, Nagelsmann resigned as head coach of the German national team. Before that, on June 22, Leipzig had already appointed Martín Demichelis to succeed Ole Werner. According to Sport Bild, Nagelsmann was in fact the "preferred candidate" of some Leipzig decision-makers at the time.
During Martín Demichelis's tenure, the team has recorded some solid wins in recent months but has also suffered several heavy defeats, including a 6-1 loss to Bayern and 4-1 losses to Real Madrid and Como.
It is reportedly these matches in particular that have made Martín Demichelis's position at Leipzig difficult.
