Bompastor: I will leave Chelsea if people want me gone

Sonia Bompastor will walk away from Chelsea if the consensus is that she is no longer right for the job, after Sunday's crushing defeat to Manchester City all but ended their title hopes.

Chelsea's run of six consecutive Women's Super League title wins appears destined to come to a halt this term, following a 5-1 victory for City at the Etihad Stadium.

City boss Andree Jeglertz insisted after the game that the title race was not over, but his team are now 11 points clear of second-placed Manchester United and 12 ahead of Chelsea in third.

Having also lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal in their previous game, Chelsea have suffered back-to-back WSL defeats for the first time since July 2015 (against Sunderland and Man City).

The Opta supercomputer now assigns City a 97.1% chance of winning the title, with Arsenal second favourites at 1.8%. Chelsea only top the pile in 0.9% of season simulations.

And Bompastor's team may now be left glancing nervously over their shoulders, given Arsenal and Tottenham are both within a point of the Blues.

The Gunners were not in action last weekend and have a game in hand, so they have an opportunity to knock Chelsea out of the Champions League qualification places.

Bompastor insisted after Sunday's loss that she would simply take things game by game, but the former Lyon boss later said she would walk away if that is what the fans want.

Bompastor said: "I'm really confident and someone who is really honest.

"If people think I'm not the right person to stay for this job at the club, I'll be happy to go, if they think that’s the right thing.

"But I will never give up. I know in football, sometimes it happens, you can be in this situation.

"I will always fight. But again, the institution of Chelsea is a lot more important than myself."

Chelsea visit Tottenham in their next game on Sunday, with that match likely to be crucial in the race for European football.

They are at home to Liverpool the following week, before facing Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup on February 22.
