Man United vs Leeds

Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off is currently playing out at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are playing host to bitter rivals Leeds United for the first time in front of fans since the Yorkshire outfit won promotion back to the Premier League in 2019/20.

Leeds put out a close-to-full-strength starting line-up at Old Trafford:

Manchester United, meanwhile, had a fairly weak front-three of Daniel James, Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood:

Despite the weakened XI, United started Saturday’s tie on the front foot, with Scott McTominay – like he did in the 6-2 win over Leeds last year – making runs from deep to cause Leeds’ defence issues.

A sloppy back-pass from Raphinha then led to a Mason Greenwood chip forcing a good save from Illan Meslier after 10 minutes.

Just moments later, Greenwood slipped in Paul Pogba who really should have done better with his effort, sending his shot wide when one on one with Meslier.

Leeds’ first chance came after 16 minutes, when Mateusz Klich’s outside-of-the-box effort forced a save from David de Gea.

It would, not too unsurprisingly, be Man United who eventually broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark though.

Pogba played a lovely dinked pass to Bruno Fernandes, cutting open Leeds’ defence to allow the Portuguese to smash home his first of the campaign.

On the back of Fernandes’ opener against Leeds, a pair of statistics highlighting the midfielder’s dominance in the PL have emerged online.

Firstly, since he made his Premier League debut, Fernandes has scored 27 league goals – 13 more than any another midfielder in the English top-flight in the same period:

Then, as per Opta, since his debut, Fernandes has been directly involved in 46 Premier League goals (27 goals, 19 assists), two more than any other player (not just midfielder) in this time.
