Bruno back with Man United after World Cup - but club remain in the dark over fitness of Sesko

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is among the latest World Cup contingent to report back to the club’s Carrington headquarters for pre-season training as Michael Carrick’s squad nears full strength.

Fernandes has returned along with his Portugal teammate Diogo Dalot and Brazil’s Matheus Cunha after reaching the last 16, while Noussair Mazraoui is also back after making it to the quarter-finals with Morocco.

The four players will have individual testing and fitness assessment in the first couple of days, and could be in the travelling squad for United’s next pre-season friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on Saturday. There, Belgian duo Senne Lammens and new £35million signing Youri Tielemans may also feature after returning to training last week.

It’s unclear if Benjamin Sesko will be able to play after missing United’s first three pre-season games against Wrexham, Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid with an ongoing shin problem, although there could be an update on the Slovenia striker later on Monday.

The last group back will be England duo Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford, plus Lisandro Martinez of Argentina, who are expected to join up with the club’s training camp in Ireland where United will also play Leeds in Dublin.

The club are not expecting any issues with the thigh injury Martinez suffered before half-time in Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, or the back complaint that kept Mainoo out of England’s win over France in the bronze medal match, but are waiting to assess both players once they return.

Speaking before United beat Atletico 2-1 in Stockholm on Saturday, Carrick said: ‘We’ve got five or six coming back on Monday, and then more a week after that. The further you get in the World Cup, the less time you have off. We had a bit of a joke about that with the players before they left, that's just how it is.’

Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte has been undergoing rehab since returning to Carrington in mid-July following surgery on the knee ligament injury he suffered in Uruguay’s group defeat to Spain.
