Can a footballer really fall out of love with football? It’s a cliche which crops up when a player is in pitiful form and his body language makes him look uninterested.
Marcus Rashford fits that description right now but I don’t think he has fallen out of love with football — I think he has fallen out of love with the way he has been playing.
I’ve been there myself. You don’t lose your love of the game but of your game.
Naturally that leaves you frustrated. You’re down in the dumps and can momentarily lose your mojo.
Rashford is 24 now. He has enjoyed a rapid rise and is allowed to go through a slump.
He isn’t alone either — a few of his Manchester United team-mates have looked off it too, such as Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho.
But Rashford will lose his place in the England squad ahead of this winter’s World Cup if he cannot snap himself out of this downward spiral. The last time he started a competitive game for Gareth Southgate was in 2020. The England boss is a loyal coach but if Rashford continues to play so poorly, he will do well to even be on the bench in Qatar.
When nothing is going your way, you need to get back to basics. Like in the 74th minute against Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Monday night at Old Trafford, when Rashford didn’t even attempt to reach a rebound from Greenwood’s shot.
It is such an easy way for forwards to get goals, but the fact he didn’t even try makes me think it was fear that was stopping him.
He is at such a low ebb and it doesn’t get much worse than being frightened of missing.
The performance of 19-year-old Anthony Elanga, who replaced Rashford late on, was fearless and full of energy. He got bums off seats. Rashford needs to remember that he used to do that, too.
Former United manager Jose Mourinho once said Rashford looked ‘completely lost’ on the right wing. His best position is on the left when he is running at defenders.
It is part of interim United boss Ralf Rangnick’s job to help him return to those days. We all want to see Rashford back to his brilliant best.

U will see in the future...He is about to enter his prime...This slump comes at a very good time...He will learn from this...
He needs to learn one good season doesn’t make him world class and that he has to evolve as a player if he plays good but the team doesn’t win anything is what he’s done so far really make him good ? I think it’s time for him to leave and prove himself else where. He’s failed along with the club for a few seasons even with all the top signings and coaches who have came and left not much has changed…

Yeah rashford used to amaze the crowds...Greenwood done that not long ago...Rashford was the same player that used to amaze everybody but now he got stuck because he got no developement..He was the same player he was three years ago..His gameplay was similar and his goals were similar(just go and watch rashfords skills and goals in utube,u will see a same thing again and again)...He's grown interms of age,his off field status has grown but his football got stuck because of that lack of developement...Greenwood is going down the same path...Sancho was making headlines in germany but 6 months in united he is gone back three yrs...I dont care who the manager will be...I think its time for united to buy whoever the big marketable name in market and try to build from scratch...After Ronaldo,Rashford is my favorite player and i wish we will see the joyful kid in him again

every footballer goes through a slump these are human beings. just the other season people were having a go at Lingaard on to find out he was suffering from mental health issues. there is more to life than football one of these days you will realize this when they take their own lives
For gods sake,I am not blaming the players...I am blaming the club for poor recruiting of coaches and recruiting of players based on market values and continiously failed to provide a good platform for the academy players....Bloody hell i said rashford is my favorite player of the next generation..Try to understand what u r reading before commenting🤦🤦🤦

I Like the part you said he's allowed a slump. Footballers are humans and go through challenges just as everyone else. Rashdord is clearly not in the right state of mind and I think it goes beyond football. I hope he returns to his old self and fires on. As fan I would not slander him because he is Red thru and thru

Rashford should take a page from Captain marvel, Bryan Robson who has injuries all over his body and yet performed excellently at club and national level throughput his career. FEARLESS.

Marcus is afraid of getting his shoulder injured again it could be the last time he'll ever play again.. so that could be resting on his mind when he is on pitch training are a competitive match he is playing in fear because of his shoulder such a good player!!! but we will not see the rashford again who we know what his capable of.

he is being crippled by the lack of creativity in the midfield.. all our forwards a w suffering drought and arent performing. that has to do with the lack of creativity in the midfield
