In the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, the Cape Verde national team, participating in the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time, battled reigning champions Argentina for 120 minutes in Miami, ultimately losing 2-3.
Although they were eliminated in the Round of 32, the "Blue Sharks" left a significant mark on this FIFA World Cup with their tenacious, resilient, and highly impactful performance.
After the match, team defender Lopes reflected on the team's historic journey, stating that despite the cruel outcome, Cape Verde had proven its worth to the world.
"It shouldn't have been a surprise." Before and after the match, Cape Verde coach Bubista and the players repeatedly emphasized one word in interviews—"competitive"—almost hundreds of times.
In the end, they were defeated by Argentina in Miami with an extra-time goal, but the way the team left the field was almost identical to how they entered the FIFA World Cup—forcing strong opponents to their limits, even at one point dragging the game into unpredictable situations.
They had every reason to be proud, and they made no secret of this emotion. But as the emotions from the intense confrontation gradually subsided, a more complex feeling emerged: they believed they could have gone further.
"I'm not the kind of person who accepts 'moral victories'," defender Roberto Lopes said in an interview with FIFA. "We were really close and even had a chance to take the game to a penalty shootout. But unfortunately, we just fell short at the last minute."
He added: "Overall, I am incredibly proud of everything we achieved here. We showed our team's character, brought the game back to parity after falling behind, and kept pressing the opponent in the final stages of the game until the final whistle."
After the match went into extra time, Argentina took the lead again in the 92nd minute, but Cape Verde did not collapse.
Left-back Cabral stepped up, scoring a spectacular goal in the subsequent attack to once again equalize the score at 2-2. At this point, he had moved forward from his full-back position, playing more like a winger.
Lopes commented: "It was a fantastic match for neutral fans, with very fast transitions between attack and defense. We were under tremendous pressure at many times, but we always responded and fought until the very last moment. Sidney's goal also demonstrated our team's technical level."
However, the match was ultimately decided by a header from Argentina defender Romero, which deflected into the net, helping Argentina narrowly advance 3-2.

You already made history. To expect more than that is clear U gratefulness. One of the primary reasons Cape Verde went this far is because nobody knows about them. If the world cup were to be repeated this year, they will hardly get one draw in the group stage because opponent teams would have marked out.
No. Their performance has been consistent right from AFCON to World Cup.

To aim higher is being ungrateful? Ungrateful to who? Where they gifted qualification?
