Carragher: Anderson can already play alongside Rice, which is good for England

Carragher praised Elliott Anderson after Manchester City's victory over Liverpool, but insisted that Declan Rice remains the Premier League's "best midfielder."

"I thought Elliott Anderson's performance was absolutely top-class," Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"There was huge debate about the transfer fee at the time, and whether he could replace Rodri and establish himself at this level, given he came from Nottingham Forest.

But he has provided the answer, playing brilliantly and showing the quality of a top player.

When Declan Rice joined Arsenal, we knew Arsenal had found a gem. We knew this exceptionally talented player would bring immense help to the team, become a game-changer, and help the team challenge for the title."

"Previously, no one thought Elliott Anderson could reach Rice's level, but his game reading ability and understanding of his position on the field are impressive.

He has controlled games in big matches at Anfield and Old Trafford, performing exceptionally well and offering great value for money."

Carragher also highly praised Anderson, stating that he is currently the second-best midfielder in the Premier League, only behind Arsenal's Rice.

"If you're a Newcastle fan watching Elliott Anderson... the club had to sell him, and you can't help but wonder if they could have sold other players instead and kept him?" Carragher said.

"The transfer fee for him wasn't high back then, but now he can arguably be considered a top midfielder in England, alongside Declan Rice.

I will always put Declan Rice first, especially given his performances towards the end of last season.

This is also good for the future of the England national team, having two top-level Premier League midfielders in the squad."
