Carragher makes blunt Alexander-Arnold transfer demand ahead of exit

Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid after deciding against renewing his contract with Liverpool and Jamie Carragher feels his old club can still bag a decent transfer fee

Jamie Carragher feels it would be a no-brainer for Liverpool to sell Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid early - provided the Spanish giants are willing to cough up £10million for a player they could land for free at the end of June.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, confirmed at the start of the week that he would not be renewing his contract at Anfield as he closes in on a dream switch to Real Madrid, who stand to snare the England star for absolutely nothing.

While Alexander-Arnold is free to move to Spain on a free transfer at the end of his contract, Los Blancos would like the right-back to join them before the start of the FIFA Club World Cup next month.

A deal would have to be struck with Liverpool for Alexander-Arnold to do so given his current deal doesn't expire until the end of June and Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, says there is a deal to be done.

He said: “It’s funny, because everything that comes up about even this now, why announce it now, there’s almost two sides to every argument, and you could almost look at it like if you’re in Trent’s camp, you look at it and think he’s shown great courage there.

“He’s not waiting until the bus tour’s finished and he announces it so he doesn’t have to see Liverpool fans, so he’s shown some courage. You might get criticism, and he’s having to put up with it. And then the flip side of that is, okay you’re announcing it now to give Real Madrid the opportunity to maybe sign you for the Club World Cup...”

Gary Neville then interrupted, referencing reports that Real Madrid - who risk heading to the tournament short of a right-back - are ready to offer Liverpool a modest seven-figure sum to take Alexander-Arnold early, asking his colleague: “Would you take the million quid if you were Liverpool?”

Carragher responded: “I think I’d want a lot more than a million quid,” to which Neville replied: “What would you take, what price would it be to go and play in that tournament?”

The former Liverpool defender then quoted between five and £10m, leaving Neville and Micah Richards in hysterics. But Carragher argued his case, adding: “Hang on, have you seen how much money it is to win it?

“If they win 100 million, and don’t forget they haven’t got any right-back, the right-back they’re playing is not a right-back so it’s not just like bringing a player in. Give us 10 million quid!”
