Jamie Carragher is disappointed by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the season as he felt the Reds are on the verge of something special.
Alexander-Arnold, who joined Liverpool's academy in 2004, confirmed on Monday that he would be departing at the end of the season following the expiration of his contract, with a move to Real Madrid reportedly already agreed.
The England international has turned out 352 times for the Reds across all competitions since making his debut for the senior team in 2016 and has won eight major titles with the club, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League title.
Alexander-Arnold will leave Anfield having registered more assists (64) than any other defender in Premier League history.
Liverpool recently wrapped up the Premier League title in style, and despite early exits in the Champions League and FA Cup, along with a defeat to Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final, it has been a season to remember under Arne Slot.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher claimed he is not angry, but disappointed in Alexander-Arnold's decision, especially considering how successful Liverpool have been this season.
"I’m not angry, I’m just disappointed that as a local player, he doesn’t think Liverpool are close enough to winning," Carragher said.
"We’ve had players in the past who left who were playing for Liverpool teams that weren’t as good as this Liverpool team.
"But Liverpool are one of the best five or six teams in Europe and could be on the verge of something special under this manager over the next five or six years.
"If I was a local player in that position, where I thought I could go win league titles, and put Liverpool above Manchester United for league titles, and get closer to Real Madrid, I would stay.
"People talk about rivalry in England but Madrid are a rival of Liverpool in the European Cup.
"Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world, and there’s part of me that looks at a kid from West Derby going to play for Real Madrid, and there’s just a disappointment because Liverpool could be on the verge of something big."
Carragher also added that Alexander-Arnold’s status as a modern Liverpool great may be diminished following his decision to leave.
"He will lose something that he's got right now in terms of Liverpool supporters' love for him; him being ‘one of their own’ will diminish," Carragher said.
"Local players are held in a higher regard in different ways. Supporters maybe expect a bit more of them in these situations.
"I don’t always agree with how local players are treated in certain situations, but my thing with Trent is it’s his career, he’s free to choose what he wants to do, and he’s going to the biggest club in the world."

As a Liverpool fan I love Arnold, but I think his time in Anfield is over. meanwhile carragher that was criticizing him the whole season saying we need a better right back is the same person that's saying he's disappointed that Arnold's leaving ☹️

A defender who score more own goals than actual goals wouldn’t know what one of the best RB in the world should do. So, Jamie should keep quite, he’s just yapping cause he hates Real Madrid

Cara is right. It always hurt faithful fans to see their home products are leaving for rival teams. Liverpool is a good rival in European competition to Madrid. Recently, after loosing two finals to Madrid, the margin is so close. Now your best right back is joining them, it really hurts and in all honesty, they can't wish success... that's the fact!
