Carragher says he would sign Erling Haaland ahead of Kylian Mbappe

Former England defender Jamie Carragher has delivered his verdict on the two brightest striking prospects in Europe - and he would sign Erling Haaland ahead of Kylian Mbappe.

Borussia Dortmund prodigy Haaland and Paris Saint-Germain hitman Mbappe are the two hottest young properties in football at the moment and have frequently been linked with moves away from their current clubs.

Haaland would be first through the door at Carragher's former club, Liverpool, if the Reds legend was in charge - and he was swayed by the 20-year-old's taunting of Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou in the Champions League last week.

Carragher admitted to Sky Sports: 'I've watched the clips today and I've always gone with Mbappe before but there's something about Haaland.

'He looks mad, but in a good way. You just think he doesn't care about anything. You see the celebration in the Champions League with the goalkeeper. I loved it - I'd go for Haaland.'

The Norway youngster has scored 47 goals and set up 11 in just 48 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

World Cup winner Mbappe has netted 116 times and provided 59 assists in 158 games for the reigning champions in his homeland.

Discussing the pair, France icon Thierry Henry said: 'They want to kill, they want to be in the box, they're looking at the defenders [and saying], 'you won't be able to live with me'.

'I can see that sometimes when the midfielder doesn't give him the ball, that look that you give your midfielder or the defender like, "hey are you going to give me the ball? I've had enough, I want to score now. I want to be the guy that's going to make the team win."

'If I'm Man City, I go for both because I would like to think that they might [be able to] handle that.'

Henry feels that both players would adapt to the demands of any style and sees some of the qualities he was famed for in them.

He said: 'I'm happy to see these guys coming because they're real strikers: they want to go in behind, they want to hurt you.

'There's nothing worse than when a guy looks at you and goes in behind again and again and again. Those guys [Mbappe and Haaland] have that mentality and it's nice to see.'

'They are two amazing strikers that can do different things. I like a killer, so Mbappe kills you a different way. Mbappe gives you something different.

'[Haaland] has people who look after him, so I don't need to tell him anything in terms of what he needs to do in his career. But right now he's at the top of the game - already, at his age.

'I think this guy can go anywhere and make things happen for anybody. It's for him to pick and choose and he has the quality to make it happen.'
