Man Utd boss Michael Carrick focused on the "good things" his side had done despite a dismal 2-0 defeat at newly-promoted Hull City on the opening day of the new season.
United were outfought and outplayed by a Hull side widely tipped to return to the Sky Bet Championship this season at the MKM Stadium, with two goals from set pieces giving the Tigers a richly deserved victory and their first over United in more than half a century.
The loss punctured the optimism around Old Trafford at the start of Carrick's first full season in charge.
He had picked up more points than anyone else since returning to the club in January and had overseen the arrival of Andre Santos and Youri Tielemans - with Carlos Baleba likely to follow - before a shock defeat to a Hull side missing as eight first-team players brought things crashing back to earth.
Despite losing 63 per cent of their duels and two thirds of their headers in a first half where Hull scored both their goals, Carrick said: "We did some good things today and it will get lost. We have to find answers but because we lose one game, it doesn't mean everything needs dissecting."
He added to TNT Sport: "Some of it was OK, there's bits to improve on. It was never going to be perfect, but going behind and giving ourselves a lot to do makes it more difficult.
"It was a typical one of those games, with a newly-promoted team at home. You can't give them much, they've got a lot to hold on to.
"After that, we had moments and opportunities but we didn't have the spark to put the chances away or create any more. We're bitterly disappointed with the result, but we won't let it knock us."
Captain Bruno Fernandes struck a more critical tone of his team-mates and said he had seen it all before as United were punished for their lack of aggression and intensity.
"It was the same mistakes we made last season, every away game we give too much of the ball to the opponent," he told TNT Sport.
"In the first 20 minutes, their goalkeeper was the one with the most touches.
"We needed to press more, be more aggressive, and then again we need to work on set-plays and not concede these type of goals.
"Against these types of teams, they are waiting for that moment. We knew before the game set-pieces would be a big part of their game."
Your views: Carrick already under pressure
Jay: "Carrick under pressure straight away. Eddie Howe anyone?"
Marek: "The job is too big for Carrick, he did a great job at the end of last season but Utd need a proven winner in charge."
JB75: "It was quite obvious we need a strong centre back, left back and striker to support when Sesko is not available. Cunha was playing so deep at times going into a midfield that was 5 deep with Hull. And the midfield just didn't seem to have the legs, not a convincing start."
Big Dave: "Same old United, no paces, lack of movement, and a total lack of effort, shocking performance, seems like nothing has changed at United."
Analysis: Hull's tactics worked but this was about fight, and United's lack of it
Sky Sports' Ron Walker:
"Hull nailed their set-up with a back five too physical for Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, and wing-backs in Lewie Coyle and Ryan Giles who served target man Oli McBurnie well.
"But this was about fight and spirit over anything on Sergej Jakirovic's tactics board. Winning almost two thirds of both their duels and headers before the break was just reward for the intensity, energy and belief they brought to the game - and United did not match it.
"It was inevitable that the Tigers would be fired up after riding the wave of promotion, but it felt as though Michael Carrick's side hadn't realised. They failed to do the basics right and were punished.
"A video of McBurnie dribbling around a static Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans will rightly do the rounds on social media tonight.
"People may point to a lack of quality in the Man Utd side but without the hunger and desire to do those basics, it would have made little difference."

Calm down, aye. It was a bad start to the season but nothing is finished. Back to training and full fitness and then we go again. It's just Hull's day today.

On this game carrick's selection is not good. The midfield was frustrated and unable to control the game and also there were no organized playing just there were confusion.

Nothing different is done. This disappointing performance and defending, they don't deserve to play in the champions league. They better strengthen their weakness points and be competitive. What we have seen today is they didn't even create a big chances, Santos doesn't fit for that position, horrible defence and poor ball handling in midfield and final quarter.
