Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham: Enzo bags a goal and assist to leave Spurs in relegation danger

  /  R47

Tottenham's fight for Premier League survival will go down to the final day after they were beaten 2-1 by rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Match Report

A point would have been enough to all but confirm Spurs' top-flight status given their superior goal difference over West Ham.

However, Roberto De Zerbi's team know they need to beat Everton on Sunday to be absolutely certain of their place in the Premier League for next season, albeit a draw should be enough.

Spurs' lively start was almost rewarded with a goal, but Mathys Tel headed Pedro Porro's delivery into the box onto the post with Robert Sanchez beaten.

But the Blues got a foothold as Cole Palmer forced a strong stop from Antonin Kinsky, and the visiting goalkeeper was picking the ball out of the net in the 18th minute when Enzo Fernandez took aim from 25 yards out and found the bottom-left corner.

The hosts pushed for a second, and it nearly came when Fernandez's free-kick rattled the crossbar before Palmer spurned a glorious chance in first-half stoppage time.

But Chelsea, who will be managed by Xabi Alonso next season, did double their lead through Andrey Santos' 67th-minute finish as the Blues ruthlessly punished Randal Kolo Muani's poor giveaway to put themselves in control.

However, Spurs hit back seven minutes later when Richarlison tucked home from close range after being found by Pape Matar Sarr's clever backheel, and De Zerbi's men had their chances to rescue a point late on.

James Maddison was denied a shot on goal after a fine piece of last-ditch defending by Jorrel Hato before the Spurs playmaker fired a free-kick over in second-half stoppage time.

Data Debrief: Spurs succumb to Chelsea yet again

On a day when Arsenal were crowned Premier League champions for the first time since 2004, Spurs are still uncertain whether they will play against their North London rivals next season after falling to defeat against Chelsea once more.

Spurs have now lost 39 Premier League matches against Chelsea, only losing more against Manchester United in the competition (40), while the Blues ended a seven-game winless run in the league, scoring as many goals today as they managed across those last seven games combined.

Now eight games unbeaten (W6 D2), this is Chelsea's longest home unbeaten run in Premier League London derbies since a run of 13 between January 2013 and May 2015.

But Calum McFarlane's side were made to work for their win. They registered an expected goals (xG) total of 0.63 from their nine shots to Spurs' 1.72 from the same number of attempts, though only three of those were on target.

Spurs' hopes for the final day may well rest on Richarlison, who will be going up against his former club Everton, who he saved from relegation in 2022.

Richarlison has been involved in 15 goals in the Premier League this season (11 goals, for assists). Only in 2019-20 for Everton (16) has he been involved in more goals in a Premier League campaign.

The 29-year-old has now struck 75 goals in the Premier League, with only Roberto Firmino (82) and Gabriel Jesus (78) netting more among Brazilian players across the competition's history.
