Chelsea are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer and, while Mauricio Pochettino may have missed out on Andre Onana, a new target has emerged
Chelsea appear to have stepped up their efforts to sign a replacement for Edouard Mendy this summer. The 31-year-old goalkeeper was heavily linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge for a large majority of the season having played understudy to Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Mendy, who sees his contract with the west Londoners expire in 2025, featured just ten times for the Blues in the Premier League last term, keeping just one clean sheet. Even when called upon, the Senegal international struggled to impress and tie down a place in the starting lineup.
However, it must be said that Mendy suffered a knock to his shoulder which kept him on the sidelines from January to March. Whether it be due to injury or simply confidence, the shot-stopper hasn't managed to reach the same elite level he once enjoyed under Thomas Tuchel.
And, for that reason, as harsh as it is, Chelsea seem prepared to cash in and provide Mauricio Pochettino a goalkeeper of his choice. According to Portuguese publication Record, Diogo Costa is on the Blues' list of options to replace Mendy.
The 23-year-old featured 33 times for Porto in the Primeira Liga last season, keeping an impressive 16 clean sheets. His eye-catching performances have reportedly courted the interest of several top clubs in Europe, including Manchester United.
Record outline that there have been no 'concrete proposal' from the west Londoners yet, but negotiations are expected to be led by Jorge Mendes, who has a 'close connection' with both parties. The report states that Porto are hoping to rake in around €75million (£64.2m) for Costa.
Earlier this month, the Portugal international was quizzed on his future at the Estádio do Dragão when links to Old Trafford were at an all-time high. Speaking to the press following Porto's win over Braga in the domestic cup final, Costa insisted that he hopes to continue at Porto.
As quoted by the Manchester Evening News, he said: "That’s the internet. It is a happiness and an honour to play for my favourite club. What they say is what they say, there is nothing concrete, I have a contract until 2027 and I hope to continue, let’s see."
Then on David De Gea, Costa added: "I will not say he'll always be my No.1 because in a club like Man United there must be competition in all positions. You can’t do it with 11 players. It is impossible. You need double positions."
