Chelsea manager Graham Potter has been tipped to return to former club Brighton to sign forward Leandro Trossard. The Belgium international has impressed so far this season, scoring twice and assisting one in six appearances.
Potter enjoyed just over three successful seasons with the Seagulls, with his ability to change formation depending on the phase of play. As a result, the former Swansea boss relied on some of his players moving into unfavoured positions – with now-Chelsea star Marc Cucurella one of those forced to adapt.
Trossard arrived at the Amex Stadium as a winger but was also deployed as a striker, No 10 and left wing-back during his time under Potter. And analyst Johan Boskamp told Voetbal Primeur that he thinks Potter may want to reunite with Trossard as soon as the January transfer window.
He explained: “Too bad, because that Graham Potter has really put down something beautiful at Brighton. Apparently Chelsea pays them a ransom of almost twenty million euro. He may win a few Champions Leagues for that.
“Under Potter, he (Trossard) grew into a strong holder in the Premier League. Hopefully, he will stay that way under his successor. I'm not too worried because his form will last. Maybe Potter will come and get him during the winter.“
Chelsea signed two forwards over the summer in the shape of Raheem Sterling and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. However, they have served as replacements for Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner rather than bolstering the squad depth in the final third, with the Blues in the market for another forward up until the dying embers of the transfer window – with Neymar and Wilfried Zaha amongst those linked.
It has been widely reported that Potter will be given immense spending power by Chelsea owner Todd Boehly in the transfer windows in order to help the pair fulfil their joint vision, starting in the January transfer window. Though he could face competition from several other top Premier League sides if the former Brighton boss decides to attempt to reunite with Trossard.
Newcastle and Arsenal have both been linked with the former Genk star over the past few months, with the latter being keen to sign a winger before the transfer window closed to provide competition for Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka. Everton also reportedly hold an interest in the Belgian and had shortlisted the versatile forward as an option if Anthony Gordon was sold to Chelsea, though that deal never materialised – with Frank Lampard holding firm on his valuation of the prospect.
