Chicago Fire pushing to sign Goretzka alongside Lewandowski pursuit

According to The Athletic, the Chicago Fire are pushing to sign German international midfielder Goretzka. In addition to their long-standing pursuit of Lewandowski, the MLS club is also negotiating another major signing, although they will face competition from European clubs.

Sources indicate that the Chicago Fire are pursuing German international midfielder Goretzka. Goretzka is currently a free agent and will leave Bayern when his contract expires at the end of this month. However, it will not be easy for the Chicago Fire to sign him, as the team will face intense competition from European clubs.

The Chicago Fire's pursuit of Goretzka is a parallel recruitment line to their long-term chase of Lewandowski. Lewandowski will travel to Chicago this weekend and is close to deciding his next destination. Lewandowski and Goretzka played together at Bayern from 2018 to 2022.

Goretzka, 31, had a successful spell at Bayern, winning 7 Bundesliga titles and 1 Champions League title with the team. He made 312 appearances for Bayern in total, including 48 this season. Goretzka is also currently a member of Germany's World Cup squad this summer. He has made 70 appearances for the German national team.

If Lewandowski signs with the Chicago Fire, the team will not have any designated player spots available for Goretzka. However, MLS teams have a precedent for handling similar situations through contract structuring, such as the LA Galaxy signing Ibrahimović, Inter Miami signing Alba and De Paul, and more recently, Inter Miami and the LA Galaxy making offers to Casemiro, all of whom utilized methods such as deferred contract options.
