Cristian Romero Awaits Barcelona as Tottenham Demands €40M

Tottenham Hotspur center-back Cristian Romero is still waiting for an offer from Barcelona, even though Atlético Madrid is close to signing him.

According to Mundo Deportivo, all signs point to Atlético Madrid as Romero's likely next destination, though the deal has not yet been finalized. The Argentine international center-back has been waiting for developments from Barcelona, particularly following Ronald Araújo's transfer to Liverpool.

Romero's name has been on Barcelona's radar for several weeks. Sporting director Deco admires him, but Barcelona has previously prioritized strengthening the striker position and securing Rodri, while also needing to offload players first. This priority remains unchanged—the striker position is still the primary target, and Rodri's transfer must be completed first. Additionally, both Deco and Flick believe Barcelona has sufficient center-back depth: Cubarsí, Gerard Martín, Christensen, and academy prospect Álvaro Cortés (the top candidate to fill Araújo's void) are all capable options. Eric, Koundé (originally a right-back), and even Rodri can adequately cover the center-back position.

However, Deco does admire Romero and has already spoken with his agent, Ciro Palermo. The Barcelona director views Romero as an experienced and quick defender who, despite being right-footed while Barcelona initially preferred a left-footed center-back, can adapt well to both positions.

Tottenham has given the green light for the player's departure at a price tag of around €40 million and is currently in negotiations with Atlético Madrid. Atlético's current offer stands at €30 million.
