Soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo sent a signed Portugal jersey to U.S. President Donald Trump. But there was a message within the gift that made it stand out.
Ronaldo’s message of peace to Trump
Amid escalating conflict between both Israel and Iran and Israel and Palestine, Ronaldo sent the jersey with the message “Playing for peace”.
The symbolic gesture was delivered by European Council President António Costa during the G7 summit in Canada, just before Trump stormed out following tensions over a joint statement on the war. Trump posed for pictures, holding the jersey beside Costa.
While it’s unclear if Ronaldo personally wrote the message or simply signed it, it comes as Trump has been increasingly aggressive in his stance, including public statements suggesting the U.S. might join Israel in military action.
The shirt and its message stood in stark contrast to Trump’s rhetoric, serving as a rare intersection of sports diplomacy and high-stakes geopolitics.
