Cristiano Ronaldo has offered a classy response after he failed to inspire Portugal to a win over Republic of Ireland in World Cup qualifying.

The Manchester United star will have been hoping to put the struggles of his club side behind him, but was frustrated in the 0-0 draw in Dublin.

Ronaldo played on the left of a front three which also included Andre Silva and Goncalo Guedes, but they were largely nullified by the likes of Shane Duffy, Seamus Coleman and Jon Egan.

Despite only managing a draw, the Selecao remain well placed to book their place in Qatar next winter, knowing they will top the group as they avoid defeat to Serbia next week.

The 36-year-old had five shots during the stalemate, but his wait for 800 career goals goes on.

Sitting on 799, one more strike will see the Portuguese legend become the first player in the modern era to reach the landmark.

In the return fixture, Ronaldo became the most prolific scorer in the history of men’s international football, but was unable to bail his country out this time around.

But after missing out against Ireland, Ronaldo paid tribute to Stephen Kenny’s side for providing the kind of stern test he anticipated.

“It's always difficult to play in Ireland, but the point earned leaves all goals at our mercy,” he posted on social media. “On Sunday, in front of our audience and in our house, we will stamp our presence at the World Cup in Qatar! Go ahead Portugal!”

The Euro 2016 champions can count themselves a little fortunate to have registered a point, after the hosts were reduced to ten men following Pepe's dismissal.

The hosts then thought they had scored a last gasp injury, only for officials to save their blushes.

Matt Doherty then thought he had scored in injury time, but referee Jesus Gil Manazno decided to rule out the Tottenham player’s goal for a foul on ‘keeper Rui Patricio.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, a frustrated Kenny told Sky Sports: "I can't see any reason why it's a foul.
