Crystal Palace 1-2 Man United RATINGS: Which star played with a point to prove?

Manchester United did it the hard way as they came from behind at Selhurst Park to beat Crystal Palace.

Oliver Glasner's side went ahead through Jean-Philippe Mateta's first half penalty.

But Palace could not add to that advantage during a dominant first 45 and they paid a heavy price when United turned the screw in the second half.

Joshua Zirkzee hauled United level before Mason Mount's free-kick move off the training ground sealed all three points.

Daily Mail Sport's NATHAN SALT was in place at Selhurst Park to rate the teams.

MANCHESTER UNITED (3-4-2-1)

Senne Lammens - 6.5

Made five saves in the first half but had two bites at the apple with Mateta’s penalty and went the wrong way both sides. Could have been a hell of a lot worse without his interventions in a truly woeful first half from United.

Leny Yoro - 4.5

Looked absolutely devastated when he was hooked after 55 minutes. Struggled against Everton and his confidence took another major hit here. Made a goal-saving block to deny Jeremy Pino firing into an open goal but was the man who clumsily gave away the penalty by fouling Jean-Philippe Mateta. Needs a spell out of the side to reset.

Matthijs de Ligt - 5.5

Struggled with Mateta match-up and made three slips that should have been critical to conceding goals. Didn’t help that the sun was in his eyes in the opening 45 minutes and he grew into the game. Still below the standards he showed he is capable of earlier in the season.

Luke Shaw - 6

Making his 300th appearance for United in all competitions, Shaw was the best defender on the pitch for Amorim’s side. He made an incredible block at 1-0 down with his bum to deny Eddie Nketiah after a De Ligt error. Making sure he doesn’t give up the left centre back role to Lisandro Martinez without a fight. Booked.

Amad Diallo - 6

Back in the wing-back role that Amorim prefers him in, Amad’s influence on this contest was overall pretty limited. Needed to do a bit more to help protect Yoro when the going got tough early on.

Casemiro - 6.5

Looked like a rabbit in headlights at times in a first half which Adam Wharton dominated. Recovered to help disrupt Palace second half and he was helped by the hosts tiring which gave him more time on the ball. Almost poked in 44 seconds in following pinball after a Dalot long throw.

Bruno Fernandes - 7.5

A player of his quality cannot allow 45 minutes to pass him by as they did here during a first half where United had an Expected Goals (xG) from open play of just 0.01. But Fernandes so often comes up with moments of magic and it was his two assists, particularly his training ground routine from a free-kick to tee up Joshua Zirkzee, that helped turn this game around.

Diogo Dalot - 7

Back in the side in a week where his manager openly said that both he and Patrick Dorgu are far better in training than in games. He looked highly motivated and his constant running gave Palace problems. He won both free-kicks that United would go on to score from. Played with a point to prove and made it emphatically.

Bryan Mbeumo - 5

A few weeks ago the idea of losing Mbeumo to the Africa Cup of Nations was absolutely terrifying. It’s still bad news for United but his last two performances have been devoid of any real quality. Dare I say he looks a bit fatigued. Stupid booking for dissent.

Mason Mount - 6

Anonymous for much of the first half, making just four passes into the final third, but thankfully for Mount and United it didn’t last. Took ownership of the second set-piece routine to drill low and hard into the goal to make it 2-1. His off the ball work can easily go unnoticed but it’s easy to see why managers love him for it.

Joshua Zirkzee - 6.5

How badly he needed the goal that got United back into the game here. Won just 3/8 duels in the first half and managed just one touch in the Palace box. When United actually started playing to his strengths and getting the ball to his feet - and not just treating him like a target man - things improved. Funny that.

MANAGER: Ruben Amorim - 7

Deserves credit for turning around a performance that was threatening to be as bad as it had been all season after a first half which produced an open play xG of just 0.01. Held his nerve when others looked ready to panic and got his rewards.

Crystal Palace (3-4-3): Henderson 6; Richards 6, Lacroix 6.5, Guehi 6; Munoz 7, Wharton 7 (Hughes 78), Kamada 5 (Lerma 85), Mitchell 6.5 (Devanny 85); Pino 6 (Uche 78), Mateta 6.5, Sarr 5 (Nketiah 38, 5)

Goals: Mateta (36 pen)

Booked: Nketiah, Guehi, Lerma

Manager: Oliver Glasner 6
