Cucurella: Rodri is the most level-headed in the Spanish dressing room

Recently, Chelsea player and Spanish international Cucurella was interviewed by Spanish National Television (RTVE). 

In a conversation with media staff, Cucurella talked about the current situation of the Spanish team coached by De la Fuente, the goals for this summer's World Cup, and the racist slogans that appeared in the stands of the RCDE Stadium during the friendly match between Spain and Egypt last Tuesday.

Which team is the favorite to win the World Cup?

"I think we Spain are a top team, without a doubt. We just won the European Cup and reached the Nations League final, only losing on penalties. I think we deserve these 'favorites' labels. We are going with a strong lineup and full of ambition, and we will do our best to go all the way."

Do you consider yourself the best left-back right now?

"I feel like I'm in very good shape. But to be honest, the best in my mind right now is Nuno Mendes. He is extremely strong, full of impact, and plays for a top team. But I am honored to be recognized like this. It hasn't been easy, and I've put in a lot of effort."

How do you see yourself?

"I wouldn't say I'm the most outstanding player, but I give my all in every training session and every exercise. Maybe that's what makes the coach gradually trust me. I always give my best. There are good and bad moments, but as long as you give your best, no one can blame you."

Who is the most composed in the Spanish dressing room?

"There are a lot of young people in the team now, not many composed ones. I choose Rodri. He is very important, everyone listens when he speaks, his aura is very steady, and he is loved and respected by everyone. Laporte is also very important. The coach combined the old and new well during the Euro, and it is the same for this World Cup preparation. He will definitely consider this in the final list."

How do you view the boos and racist songs at the Spanish home ground towards Joan Garcia?

"Regarding Joan's situation, we actually expected it, and we even joked about it this week. But I believe that was just a minority of people, and most of the audience reacted very well. I heard everyone chanting his name in unison, which was a beautiful moment for him, after all, it was his first national team appearance."

"As for those songs, it's really regrettable. I don't think they meant to hurt Yamal, they just wanted to provoke and target their opponents. But these kinds of things must be handled with extra caution, and they should change their approach, because it can indeed offend others. What should have been a festival for fans to enjoy could end up turning into a problem, or even something more serious."

Which team and player do you want to avoid in the World Cup?

"There are many strong teams, and the overall level is very high. France has a strong lineup, and so does Argentina, they are the defending champions. I am also very optimistic about the Netherlands. In addition, we must consider the different weather conditions. I went there with Chelsea last season and experienced some strange situations. But that won't be an excuse, but the weather can indeed bring some upsets."

Has the World Cup roster been basically determined?

"Most of the players in this squad should be selected for the World Cup roster, but I believe the coach has his own plans. He always likes to bring some surprises at the last moment, and that's his job. We must trust him, for example, there were many questions when the European Cup roster was first announced, but it later proved that his choices were all reasonable. We fully trust him, and he will choose the strongest lineup to meet this challenge."
