In the 23rd round of the Premier League, during Arsenal's 2-3 home defeat to Manchester United, Harry Maguire blocked a shot with his hand inside the penalty area, leaving Arsenal fans furious with the VAR and referee's decision.
The Daily Mail explained why Maguire was not penalized for a foul.
With 20 minutes remaining in the match and Manchester United leading 2-1, Merino's shot struck Maguire's outstretched arm as he lay on the ground. VAR quickly reviewed the incident and allowed play to continue without taking further action.
According to the rules, if the ball touches a player’s hand or arm used for supporting the body while falling, it does not constitute a foul. This, reportedly, was the explanation given by the officiating team after the Maguire incident.
However, Arsenal supporters were frustrated by their team’s first Premier League home loss of the season and expressed anger over the lack of a penalty call.
“Explain to me how this isn’t handball,” Arsenal Fan TV wrote on social media, accompanied by a freeze-frame image showing the ball hitting Maguire’s arm.
Another fan commented: “Maguire turned into a goalkeeper.”
A third fan said: “Maguire clearly has a hand ball, yet no penalty was given. His hand even caused the ball to bounce off the grass—how is that not handball?”
Nevertheless, some acknowledged that the referee made the correct call. One Arsenal fan wrote: “Such incident has never been penalized and never will be a penalty.”
