Kevin De Bruyne returns to the Etihad Stadium for the first time since his 10-yearstay came to an end this summer as Manchester City play host to Napoli in the Champions League
Kevin De Bruyne has shared his true feelings on his return to the Etihad Stadium with Napoli. The Manchester City legend, who dedicated nearly a decade to the club, departed for a fresh challenge over the summer after Pep Guardiola opted against offering him a contract extension.
Aged 34, De Bruyne left the Premier League determined to prove a point, and has already netted twice in three Serie A outings this campaign for the defending Italian title-holders.
The Champions League clash with City will present his first major test in a slightly different shade of blue. Guardiola and his players will also be praying De Bruyne doesn't return to torment them on Thursday.
Before kick-off, the experienced midfielder posted two images from the Etihad Stadium on his Instagram account, complete with a waving emoji. It could come as a nod to his delight at returning to a venue he considered home for such an extended period.
Discussing the Premier League and Champions League winner's homecoming earlier this week, Pep Guardiola said: "Of course it's nice for him to come back.
"[I'm excited] to see him after the game. Not surprised [on his start in Italy]. He plays at that level, absolutely quick - the players at that level don't need to adapt.
"[What does he give to Napoli?] His incredible talent, vision, pass, assists and goals in the final third. He's unique."
Oasis star and City fan Noel Gallagher revealed he contacted De Bruyne ahead of the match. "I've just texted him actually, I begged him not to score," Gallagher told talkSPORT.
"It'll be a weird night… to see him in a different kit and to see him line up against us will be quite emotional, because he's the king. I expect him to have a great game and I expect him to make assists. Just as long as he doesn't score."
Meanwhile, Napoli manager Antonio Conte is leaning on De Bruyne's knowledge of all things City, having requested some information from the midfielder. “To be honest it’s always been very careful preparation like it has been for every single match. We’re not doing anything particularly different,” Conte explained.
“I’ve spoken to Kevin. I’ve asked him a few things, he’s been a part of this club for 10 years and had a great coach like Pep Guardiola.
“Kevin will be excited to be playing but I’m hoping that after the starting whistle he will find his feet and remember that he’s playing for our great Napoli and contribute like he has been doing.”
