This approach includes selling stakes in future transfer fees and retaining buy-back clauses, optimizing returns on youth development investment while transforming La Masia into a significant revenue source while maintaining control over homegrown talent.
Recent deals have validated this approach. The first came from Billie Hillier's transfer last summer, with Barcelona retaining 40% of future transfer fees. The second was Jofre Torrents' move to Ajax, a deal potentially worth up to 6 million euros including performance-based clauses.
Torrents' transfer to the Dutch club exemplifies the technical department's strategy. Barcelona retained 50% of future transfer fees and included a buy-back clause, allowing the club to reacquire the player if he develops quickly enough.
The technical department rates Torrents highly and considers him a prospect to monitor closely. Torrents himself views Ajax as a platform for European development, with ambitions to return to Barcelona and compete for a starting position at left-back.
Deco's strategy follows established precedent, including the transfers of Sergi Domínguez, Dani Rodríguez to Dinamo Zagreb this summer, and Andrés Cuenca to Serie A side Como, all structured with Barcelona retaining percentages of future transfer fees.
This approach demonstrates that investment in La Masia serves dual purposes: supplying talent to the first team while ensuring financial sustainability through strategic asset management.
