Denmark's deja vu with the 1992 European Championship-winning team

As Denmark prepare for their Euro 2020 semi-final tie with England, they will have every confidence that they can not only progress to the final, but win the tournament.

They will be looking to replicate the success Denmark side at the 1992 European Championship, and will take heart from the numerous parallels that they share with that team.

A close shave at the group stage

The 1992 side, coached by Richard Moller Nielsen, also got off to a slow start at the tournament. Having not originally qualified for the tournament, the disqualification of Yugoslavia saw Denmark take their place, ten days after the start of the competition.

After a draw and a defeat against England and Sweden respectively, they needed to defeat France and for England not to beat Sweden. When this happened, they were through.

This time around, Kasper Hjulmand's side found themselves on zero points after two matches, before victory over Russia saw them qualify for the Round of 16.

A health issue that affected the side

Another similarity that both sides share is a health issue faced by a key player which led to them leaving the tournament.

We all know what happened this year with Christian Eriksen suffering a heart attack on the pitch, but in 1992, Kim Vilfort had to leave the team's camp midway through the tournament after his sister was hospitalised due to leukaemia.

The absence of their best player and No.10

Just as Denmark have had to do without their talisman Christian Eriksen this tournament, they faced a similar situation in 1992 with Michael Laudrup.

Laudrup did not participate in that European Championship following disputes with the national team coach, but Denmark managed to win the tournament without their star man.

Players with the same surnames

A key reason for Denmark's triumph back in 1992 was the stellar tournament of their goalkeeper, Peter Schmeichel, a player who had been starting to make a name for himself for Manchester United.

Now, his son Kasper Schmeichel is the Denmark goalkeeper, who has established himself as one of the finest shot-stoppers in Europe.

Also, as with the current squad, the 1992 squad featured surnames such as Christensen, Jensen, Andersen and Poulsen.
