Deschamps on his future after final defeat: I don’t want to talk about that

As quoted by RMC following France’s World Cup final loss to Argentina in Qatar, coach Didier Deschamps explained to French television station TF1 that he didn’t want to discuss his future in the role, despite reportedly being set to stay until EURO 2024 as Les Bleus manager.

Deschamps described the defeat as a “huge disappointment” before highlighting the team’s tricky build-up to the game with a virus in the camp and an up-and-down performance which saw France reach the 80th minute without a shot on target before scoring twice in short order to equalise at 2-2. However, the coach pointed out such issues are “not excuses” for the loss while adding that it was “a real pleasure” to share the tournament with the team’s staff and players, describing the experience as a “human adventure” above all else.

The coach pointed out that, although the team didn’t reach their prize at the end of the journey, they were close, which “hurts and it will take time to digest,” Deschamps said before adding that, when asked, even if the final had been won, he wouldn’t give an answer on his future intentions. The important thing is that the “France team is above everything else” the 54-year-old explained. “I will meet with the [FFF] president at the start of the year as planned, we will see.”

“Tonight,” Deschamps explained, “I don’t want to talk about that.”
