On March 31, in the final of the European qualifying play-offs for the World Cup, Italy faced Bosnia and Herzegovina. Italy drew 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina in regular time, but lost 1-4 on penalties, failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time.

Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is currently the most valuable goalkeeper on Transfermarkt at €45 million, yet he has never participated in a World Cup.

The next World Cup—the 2030 World Cup—will see Donnarumma turn 31.

To date, Donnarumma has made 80 appearances for Italy, conceding 75 goals and keeping 33 clean sheets.
