Patrick Dorgu bizarrely told the referee not to give Manchester United a penalty during the Red Devils' win over Real Sociedad.
United booked their spots in the last-eight of the Europa League on Thursday with a comfortable victory over the Spanish side, winning 4-1 on the night and 5-2 on aggregate.
Bruno Fernandes netted a hat-trick, with two of those strikes coming from the penalty spot with four penalties given by French referee Benoit Bastien - three for United and one for the visitors.
A fourth penalty was awarded late on for a foul on Dorgu, but the decision was overturned after a brief VAR check that showed Hamari Traore had made contact with the ball first.
Video replays then showed Dorgu telling Bastien that he felt he had not been fouled by Traore - leading to the original penalty decision being overturned by VAR.
The incident came after three penalties and a red card had already been issued by the French official in what was a chaotic night at Old Trafford.
Mikel Oyarzabal put the visitors ahead on the evening after just 10 minutes before the Red Devils hit back with Fernandes' first goal from the spot six minutes later.
The United skipper then added a second penalty five minutes after the interval before the complexion of the tie changed dramatically after the hour mark.
Jon Aramburu was shown a straight red card for a push on Dorgu with the Sociedad defender as the last man and having been beaten for pace.
Fernandes completed his hat-trick three minutes from time with a clinical finish befor Diogo Dalot added extra gloss to the scoreline with a curled finish in injury time.
Ruben Amorim's side are rewarded with a tie against French side Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals after the Ligue 1 outfit thumped FCSB 4-0 on Thursday night to ensure an emphatic 7-1 victory on aggregate.

Watching the way Dorgu plays plays, makes me say, Give Amorim time to get his own players then United will be back untouchable
