Dortmund 'in talks' to re-sign Sancho as his MU contract expires in summer

Jadon Sancho making a permanent return to Borussia Dortmund this summer is reportedly a 'realistic' prospect.

Dortmund's bosses are increasingly warming to the idea and they have made contact with Sancho's camp, according to German newspaper Bild.

Sancho's contract with Manchester United expires at the end of the season, though the club have the option to extend it for a year. He has spent the campaign on loan at Aston Villa.

The winger is apparently willing to take a pay cut to rejoin Dortmund, though they haven't spoken to him directly, only his representatives, Bild reports.

His salary is reported to be around £250,000 per week but he may need to more than halve that if he moves to Dortmund, who are second in the Bundesliga.

United had to pay around £100,000 of his salary when he joined Borussia Dortmund on loan in 2023-24.

He will be among their top summer transfer targets as many of their top brass are keen on securing his signature.

Sporting director Sebastian Kehl is leading the charge, and now managing director Lars Ricken and head coach Niko Kovac are warming to the idea.

Sancho is, of course, popular with the Dortmund fans. He spent four seasons there as a permanent player between 2017 and 2021, scoring 50 goals.

United signed Sancho for £73million in 2021 after being impressed by his scintillating form at Borussia Dortmund, but he never reached the heights he had in Germany.

He went back on loan to Dortmund in 2023-24 and helped them reach the Champions League final, though he was unable to recapture his goalscoring form.

The 25-year-old spent last season on loan at Chelsea and showed flashes of his best work but was ultimately unable to bring end product on a consistent basis, scoring five and assisting 10 in 42 games across all competitions.

He won the Conference League with them, scoring off the bench in their 4-1 demolition of Real Betis in the final.

Chelsea rejected their £25m obligation to sign the winger at the end of his loan and actually paid United £5m to get out of it.

Chances were always going to be hard to come by at Old Trafford after he fell out with Erik ten Hag and then, through little fault of his own, did not fit into Ruben Amorim's system, which did not accommodate wingers.

Bild claim that Sancho is conscious of the need to get his career back on track 'quickly' and that Dortmund would be the best place for him to do so.

Juventus were also in for him over the summer but were unable to meet his wage demands, even with a pay cut factored in.
