In the final round of the Club World Cup group stage, River Plate suffered a 0–2 defeat to Inter Milan, finishing third in their group and crashing out of the tournament.
During the match, River defenders Lucas Martínez and Gonzalo Montiel were both sent off.
According to post-match statistics, there have been a total of 10 red cards issued since the start of this season’s Club World Cup—five of them to players from Argentine clubs.
In addition to Martínez and Montiel’s dismissals, River Plate midfielder Castaño was also sent off late in their previous match against Monterrey. Meanwhile, fellow Argentine side Boca Juniors saw both Herrera and Figal receive red cards in their opening group stage match against Benfica.
Coincidentally, both River Plate and Boca Juniors were eliminated during the group stage of the tournament.
