Drawn-out drought: Anthony Martial’s scoring struggles

Anthony Martial was one of the headline additions for Monterrey in the most recent transfer window. Given his résumé and the caliber of clubs he’s played for, expectations were understandably high. But the French forward is currently mired in a goal-scoring drought.

“What matters is he brings goals”

According to Domènec Torrent, head coach of Los Albiazules, the club was specifically looking for an attacking player with a nose for goal in their final signing. Martial, a globally recognized talent who operates across the front line, fit the profile - but he hasn’t found the back of the net in months.

“He could play as a 9, a 10, or even as an attacking midfielder. What matters is that he brings goals and raises the team’s level. If he doesn’t improve the squad, there’s no point in signing him,” Torrent said back in August 2025.

With the transfer deadline looming, Monterrey saw an opportunity in Martial’s availability and moved quickly to finalize the deal. However, the former Manchester United striker hasn’t scored since February - eight months and counting.

Martial’s arrival in Monterrey hasn’t been without criticism. Fans have questioned his on-field attitude and pointed to missed chances, especially in the recent match against Tijuana at the Estadio Caliente.

The last time Martial found the net

Martial’s goal drought actually dates back to his stint in Greece. The last time he scored was on February 9, when he netted a brace against Panserraikos. During his brief spell with AEK Athens - less than a year - he managed just nine goal contributions.

Now, Rayados face the challenge of reigniting Martial’s form and restoring the version of him that once lit up Old Trafford. He spent nearly nine years at United across two separate stints, and the club will be hoping to tap into that pedigree.
