Early points pivotal for PSG in the Champions League, says Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique insisted that the primary focus for Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League this season is to get as many points as possible in the league phase.

The defending champions make the trip to BayArena on Tuesday to face Bayer Leverkusen, hoping to make it three wins from three in Europe's flagship competition.

Indeed, PSG would equal their longest ever winning run in the Champions League/European Cup with a victory over Kasper Hjulmand's side (currently on a five-game streak), with the previous six-game run achieved between September and December 1994.

And their title defence has started strongly in 2025-26, downing Atalanta on MD1 before coming from behind to beat last year's semi-finalists Barcelona 2-1 away from home.

But the PSG boss was not resting on his laurels, given how close his team came from exiting the competition at the first stage last season.

After winning their opening fixture against Girona, the Parisiens lost three of their next four matches, needing three consecutive victories to seal a play-off spot.

"What we're looking for is the same thing as last year: to take as many points as possible. We have a difficult draw, but that's the goal," Luis Enrique added.

"Tuesday will be a good test for both teams. We're happy to have won the previous two matches, but [Leverkusen] is a different game."

PSG are one of six teams, along with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Inter, Arsenal and Qarabag to still hold a perfect record heading into the third round of league phase ties.

But they were made to work for their triumph over Hansi Flick's Barcelona last time out, with Goncalo Ramos' 90th-minute winner enough at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.

The victory was made even more impressive given the number of absentees, with the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, Joao Neves and Marquinhos all out injured.

Their starting XI was aged just 23 years and 98 days – the second-youngest ever named by a reigning Champions League champion.

And Luis Enrique believes his talented youngsters must take confidence from that triumph into their clash with Leverkusen.

"Of course, confidence is the word. Especially for the young players. They showed they have quality," Luis Enrique added.

"This start to the season has been very different, very difficult. We overcame difficulties that don't normally occur. But we showed fighting spirit, resilience.

"It will be an important match. The sooner we can pick up points, the better. We're only thinking about winning and earning it. It will be difficult."

The Parisiens will have Ballon d'Or winner Dembele in their ranks for the trip to Germany, with Doue, Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also included in the travelling party.

"You think a lot about the Ballon d'Or, but it's mostly about Dembele. He's the same player," the Spaniard added.

"We're very happy to have him, like Marquinhos. And Desire Doue. It's always important for us to have these opportunities.

"We want to know how they feel in training, and we'll see [on Tuesday]."
