Ederson believes Manchester City can ‘definitely’ complete an historic treble this season.

City, six points clear at the top of the Premier League, go into tomorrow’s Champions League last-16 second leg with Sporting Lisbon boasting a five-goal advantage.

The goalkeeper was unflinching when meeting the prospect of Pep Guardiola’s side lifting three major trophies this term as they attempt to go one further than last year in Europe.

‘We’re fully capable of achieving that objective. Definitely,’ he said. ‘We know how difficult it is.

'The season in England is so intense. It’s very demanding on the entire group. We have the quality to do it. We’ve shown it previously and showing it at the moment.

‘We look to win every competition but have to take things step by step to progress.

'There are challenges in every competition, but take it step by step and try to achieve great things in the future.’

Guardiola goes into the tie against Sporting without a senior right back, revealing that Joao Cancelo is unwell.

Kyle Walker sits out the second of his three-match European ban after a straight red card for a petulant kick out away at RB Leipzig in December.

‘We don’t have many players, we have just 14 available,’ Guardiola said. ‘We have a few problems, just three defenders. Joao is sick and cannot play. Maybe we’ll need Luke [Mbete].

‘When a player does a stupid thing, he deserves a three-match ban. He did a stupid thing.

'I’m not kind to Kyle for this kind of action. I am still so angry with him. But he's so important for us, see how he played against [Manchester] United?

‘Against Leipzig, he did this action when we had qualified and he deserved the ban. The club appealed but I did not agree. Hopefully, he learns for the future.’

Ederson, who hailed the influence of captain Fernandinho, also revealed how retaining his concentration has become the hardest part of the job.

‘It is difficult to concentrate in games when I don't see much of the ball but I always look to be constantly communicating with my teammates,’ he added.

‘A lot of the time I say to my teammates after the game that I'm tired.

'A game where I don't make many saves I'm tired mentally because the mental tiredness is more tiring than the physical tiredness.

'Concentrating for 90 minutes is difficult, I do it better these days due to my communication with the rest of the team.’
