Real Madrid avoided defeat in their opening LaLiga game for an 18th successive season as debutant Carlos Espí popped up with a late winner to secure a 2-1 win against Espanyol, and make it seven straight wins for José Mourinho in managerial debuts.
Match Report
Breaking Barcelona’s period of dominance was the goal in Mourinho’s first spell in charge of Real, and the mission is the same second time around. And the self-proclaimed Special One’s sophomore reign got off to the perfect start inside the opening 10 minutes, as Jude Bellingham climbed highest inside the area to power home Arda Güler’s teasing free-kick at the near post. Espanyol were visibly rattled by Real’s intensity and high pressure, but so nearly hit back midway through the half when Clemens Riedel’s 30-yard piledriver forced Thibaut Courtois to make a smart stop.
That pot-shot from distance seemed to spur the hosts into life, and they managed to peg Mourinho’s men back moments later. Javi Hernández did the heavy lifting in the build up, jinking his way to the byline before cutting back for the unmarked Álex Calatrava to sweep home. The two sides traded blows in a bid to take a lead into HT, and Kylian Mbappé saw an effort blocked by the legs of Marko Dmitrović, before an unmarked Roberto Fernández fluffed a header from just six yards out.
The second half began in much similar fashion to the first, with Real firmly on the front foot, and another Bellingham header almost nosed the visitors back in front, but this time the Englishman’s header crashed back off the crossbar. Mourinho introduced new club-record signing Yan Diomandé shortly after the hour mark to try and provide his side with some extra final-third impetus, and it almost proved to be a masterstroke when his deflected cross fell favourably for Federico Valverde on the edge of the area, but his shot bounced away to safety off the outside of the post.
Mbappé’s half-volley from the edge of the area 10 minutes from time – which went out closer to the corner flag than the target – was somewhat symptomatic of the struggles Real faced all evening. But they found their key moment in the first minute of stoppage time when Espí was quickest to react to a loose ball inside the area, rounding Dmitrović and hammering into an empty net to bring a halt to Espanyol’s four-match unbeaten LaLiga run and get Real off to a winning start.

Which such poor display and selfish players like mbappé and vinicius. I don't see Real Madrid winning trophies neither beating Barcelona this season. 😢

We won but Mourinho subbing off Jude and Guler the best players on the pitch and leaving Bernado Silava on was a travesty

Espanol is a very tough opponent but Real Madrid has proven that they are ready to compete in all competitions this year. I can say I’m satisfied with all the signings, kanote is a wall😁 the pressing from start to the end was just what I needed from them at the end we got a natural number 9😅

different squad, different coach but same problem. our problem since 2 years ago is not about scoring goals but HOW to maintain the lead?... HOW to stay focus after we score goal?... HOW to play with clean sheet?... HOW to stop conceding unnecessary goals?... HOW to play compact defense?.... believe it or not diamonde is not supposed to be our priority signing but a good center back, don't get it wrong, diamonde is a good addition but not the necessity,we have enough players to operate in the left wing. our center back is not reliable and we choose to bring in calamity konate who always makes errors lead to goal, instead of spending on quality center back we keep waiting for injured militao and experimental asencio, only a fool will keep on doing the same thing every time and expecting different result. if you think konate will improve our center back and silva will solve our midfield problem, then you should be ready for the same results of last season, maybe we can luckily win a trophy (s) because of Mourinho. one of our biggest mistakes this season is to renew vini Jr contract, allow this guy to go and look for another hungry player who is ready to work hard and wants to win something, not vini Jr who already achieved his aim and now looking for money. Carlos espi is our new joselu who can give us another way of getting goals but we must find a way to stop conceding goals. HALA MADRID 💪 💪

Exciting football is coming soon to Real Madrid. Idk if you guys are able to see beyond the scoreline. Those quick dribbles and flick-offs were beautiful to see. Diomande and Dumfries look electrifying on that right flank. Bellingham played as a LM as he did in Dortmund and he's looking GREAT! This is Arda Guler's season. The best is yet to come guys

This is the type of winnings that brings you trophies. Espanyol is a very tough opponent, winning against them away from home is massive. Hala Madrid 😍

The way Madrid have played after the first half an hour, these players are about to see an angry version of Mourinho soon and few of them will warm the bench on permanent basis
