The Evening Standard reports that Manchester United have ruled out appointing Julian Nagelsmann as manager. Carrick remains in interim charge, and reports suggest he will be sacked once a successor is found, with former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe a frontrunner for the role.
Reports on Monday stated that Howe was the top choice for Manchester United's Football Director Jason Wilcox, while Nagelsmann – who is also out of work after leaving his role as Germany national team coach – was favoured by Recruitment Director Christopher Vivell.
However, Nagelsmann has less support from others behind the scenes, and The Athletic reported that his appointment is unlikely.
Howe is currently without a job, but the cost of his appointment could be higher than expected as Newcastle United is reportedly still owed compensation following his departure this summer.
The Guardian stated that this compensation was initially believed to be as high as £6 million, but was later revised to be closer to £3 million. Howe and assistant coach Jason Tindall command substantial salaries.
The same outlet also reported that Carrick would only be sacked once a successor is found.
On Monday, Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada held talks with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe as Manchester United evaluated their options.
The financial implications of sacking Carrick, paying off the coaching staff, and hiring a successor could influence the final decision. However, the club must soon provide a clear statement, as fans await clarity on the board's plans.
On Tuesday morning, Carrick arrived early at the Carrington training ground, with his future still uncertain.
The former midfielder stabilized the team after a difficult spell under Amorim. Since taking over in January, Manchester United climbed to third in the Premier League, a performance that earned him a two-year contract. But after Sunday's 3-0 defeat to AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford, he faces the risk of being sacked just five months later.
Discussions surrounding the managerial position continued into Monday, with CEO Omar Berrada and Football Director Jason Wilcox both involved. On Monday afternoon, Carrick spent around three hours at Carrington watching Manchester United's U21s play an internal friendly against Hull City. He departed around 5 PM, shortly after Wilcox left.
Carrick made another early appearance on Tuesday before the players returned from their day off, as uncertainty over his future persisted. Wilcox and Berrada also arrived at the Carrington training ground shortly after.

what difference will he bring because you will also sack him before the 2026 / 2027 season ends , no coach will ever bring fortune to this club as long as the owners of the are still leading the club , we at Arsenal went through this difficult time just for some few seasons and we only hired Unai Emery and Freddie as an interim coach after the departure of Arsene Wenger and then the owners hired Mikel Arteta who changed the team in just two seasons to clip the second spot in three concecutive seasons before he won his Epl Tittle on the fourth season something that has taken United 13 years after Sir Alex Ferguson to rebuild the team to a winning side hiring more than 10 coaches who all failed dismally except , Jose Mourinho and Ole Soldjar who atleast got then the Europa league cup ; just sale the club and the fans will enjoy following this big club otherwise yoh will keep on wasting funds hiring people who will not change its fortunes

Instead of appointing Howe! Why can't Manchester United give Carrick players that worth his service and give him time, or Howe will not sign new players if Manchester United possibly appoint him??

Carrick is shit he inherited Amorim press when he was sacked now his philosophy is rubbish

It's clear that Manchester United Directors are clueless , when it comes to who's leaving and who's coming. If you want Bruno Fernandez and Michael Carrick to leave, for instance, you must have their respective replacement in mind, otherwise you're making matters worse.

Howe is just a little better than Carrick. Ideally, the top 3 are: 1. Unai Emery 2. Luis Enrique 3. Antonio Conte

and what did he achieve whilst he was there?

United’s problem isn’t the coach; it’s the quality of their players! City spent hundreds of millions to build a world class midfield, while United were busy shopping in the bargain bin. 🤣 Liverpool spent big on Wirtz and Isak despite winning no trophies last season, and they were still ready to splash over £100M on Barcola. You can’t build a trophy winning team on a budget and expect Pep-level results. United needs quality players, not another manager.

The sporting directors need to work together with the manager to get good results. Carrick need to be backed and supported. Even if they bring other Managers still he will fail because the causes are not from the manager nor the players. Support the manager, be patient with him by giving him time to build the team at least after three years we can see the changes. How many years has Arteta taken to make Arsenal to get a cup? When Sir Alex Ferguson came to MANUTD, it took him three years to start getting trophies. How long did it take Crop in Liverpool to get trophies after him joining the club. Directors need to understand this. Support the manager, buy players of his choice in every department, How long has taken Arsenal to get such a squad. Sucking managers IS NOT GOING to solve any problem in this club.

Carrick doesn't have a problem, what Carrick needs is authority to pick the players himself and the club most buy the players that he wants that's the reason we hired him in the first place rebuild the buy us tight defence that can defend our goals even if we have to win the game just with 1 goal up. get a left back like Robinson and Balde. center back like Baston or players like the prime Ramos and Pepe and a right back like Trend and we shall see the glory days back at the theatre of dreams ✨

ManU should stop fumbling and buy good players, the problem is not the coaching or Carrick. January transfer is up coming they should buy key players who will support the squad. All what they have are just butterfly players as well as Chelsea kung-fu club. The red card fc
