Everton are interested in signing Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo in a £30million deal.

New Everton boss Marco Silva, who was coach of Sporting Lisbon when Rojo left the Portuguese club for Old Trafford in a £16m transfer four years ago, has made signing the Argentina centre-back one of his priorities this summer.

Silva knows the 28-year-old well and wants him to play on the left side of a back-three.

United are aware of Everton’s interest but have yet to receive a formal offer.

Rojo went on holiday to Mexico after the World Cup and returned to Manchester last week instead of joining his United teammates on tour in the US.

He was said to be carrying a knock from the tournament in Russia, but the main reason was to discuss his future after learning that he was the most likely of United’s five centre-backs to be sold to make way for a new signing.

United have also received an inquiry from Lyon for Victor Lindelof, who only moved to Old Trafford from Benfica a year ago, but they knocked back the interest from the French club.

Jose Mourinho is desperate to sign a new centre-back before the transfer window closes on August 9, but United are being frustrated in their efforts to prise England defender Harry Maguire from Leicester.

Maguire is thought to be keen on a move, but Leicester don’t have to sell and are reluctant to do so after allowing Riyad Mahrez to join Manchester City.
