Ex-Bayern physician on row with Guardiola: "He thought recovery took too long"

This week, former Bayern team physician Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt was interviewed by the German media Der Spiegel, reviewing his conflict with Guardiola in 2015.

In 1977, Wohlfahrt began working at Bayern Munich. In 1996, he began serving as the German national team physician. In 2009, Wohlfahrt returned to Bayern Munich as team physician. In April 2015, Wohlfahrt resigned due to a conflict with Guardiola. In 2017, he returned to Bayern Munich again.

Looking back on the conflict with Guardiola, Wohlfahrt said: "It was April 15th, a terrible day. We lost the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final to Porto."

"After the game, in the locker room, I was blamed for the loss in front of the whole team. They said we had too many injured players and that I was taking too long to get the players back to fitness. This was complete nonsense, and I refused to accept this statement."

"I was very angry about this statement, because top athletes from all over the world come to me since my diagnosis is more accurate. The recovery process is usually faster than elsewhere, and my medications have no side effects."

"However, for Guardiola, the recovery speed was not fast enough. Apparently, at Barça, he was used to having the final say on medical matters, but at Bayern Munich, the situation was very different."

"I have always appreciated the respect and trust of the coaches. Kramer once described me as the 'God of Luck for German football', and Lattek often waited until the last minute to announce the starting lineup, saying: 'The final decision rests with the team physician'."

"Hoeness always supported me, but he was in prison at the time. If he had been at the club at the time, I'm convinced that the conflict between Guardiola and I would not have happened."
