Ex-Inter Milan chief Paolillo: Gattuso should never have been appointed

Former Inter Milan chief exec Ernesto Paolillo insists Italy should dump coach Rino Gattuso after last night\'s World Cup qualifying failure.

Defeat on penalties to Bosnia sees Italy miss a third World Cup this summer.

Paolillo told TMW: "I'll start with the coaches' decisions: they were made incorrectly. A good coach like (Luciano) Spalletti or other good coaches we've had should have been retained to make long-term plans, not make such hasty decisions.

"Gattuso shouldn't even have been appointed as the national team manager."

"He's never produced significant results as a coach so far. He's not a coach who can dictate a style of play to the team. Ultimately, the players end up going onto the pitch in a somewhat cohesive fashion.

"You need a manager who knows how to make the players he selects coexist."

On who FIGC should turn to, Paolillo added: "(Roberto) Mancini was perhaps 'burned' by how things ended. In any case, we need coaches like that, as well as Spalletti and (Claudio) Ranieri, who might reconsider now.

"We have good coaches. I think the best coach for for the national team is Gian Piero Gasperini."
