Jordan Henderson looks set to leave Ajax this summer and the ex-Liverpool midfielder is commanding interest from around Europe, including from Rangers if Steven Gerrard returns
Jordan Henderson could make a stunning return to hometown club Sunderland this summer. The former Liverpool captain joined the Reds from Sunderland in 2011 and his boyhood side are interested in bringing him back to the Stadium of Light after securing promotion to the Premier League.
Henderson, 34, currently plays for Ajax but is drawing interest from multiple clubs. The England international, who was present for the Black Cats' play-off victory at Wembley, is also wanted by Rangers and two Serie A teams.
The midfielder remains close to Steven Gerrard, who wants to make Henderson his top target if he is reappointed at Ibrox. A move to Wearside is thought to be Henderson's preferred choice, however.
The 83-times capped ace does not fit Sunderland's typical transfer model; the club usually targets young talents. But both sporting director Kristjaan Speakman and head coach Regis Le Bris see Henderson as an ideal perfect role model to add experience to a squad returning to the Premier League for the first time since being relegated in 2017.
Henderson still has 12 months left on his Ajax contract but he looks set to leave the Eredivisie side after the departure of Italian head coach Francesco Farioli. The Dutch giants blew a commanding nine-point lead at the top of the table to finish runners-up to PSV Eindhoven.
Henderson almost left Ajax in January amid interest from Ligue 1 club Monaco. The sides were unable to agree a fee and it was reported the star demanded that Ajax chiefs rip up his deal to allow him to move on a free transfer and even threatened to stop playing.
That situation saw tense press conference when a journalist put the situation to Henderson following the transfer window. The player defended himself in a spiky exchange where he suggested much of the coverage was not true.
Henderson came through Sunderland's academy to break into the first team as a teenager. After twice being named the club's young player of the year he earned a £20million move to Anfield.
There he won the Champions League and Premier League and captained the side under Jurgen Klopp before controversially departing to the Saudi Pro League. Henderson's stay in the Middle East was shortlived as he ended his deal after a matter of months and completed a move to Ajax.
Under Thomas Tuchel, Henderson has regained his place in the England squad and perhaps now has an eye on making next summer's World Cup.
