Liverpool’s dismal season took another disappointing turn over the weekend as they were pegged back late by Tottenham with many pundits left stumped by the decisions of Arne Slot

Ex-Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant appealed for help to understand Arne Slot’s selection decisions vs Tottenham. The reigning Premier League champions stumbled to another disappointing result against the North London side at Anfield on Sunday.

Dominik Szoboszlai had given the Reds the lead from a free kick, only for Richarlison to level matters late on. It leaves Liverpool fifth in the Premier League and in a real fight to secure a Champions League spot for next season.

Speaking after Sunday’s draw at Anfield, former Red Pennant was left scratching his help at some of the decisions made by boss Slot.

Taking to social media, the former winger said: “Someone please help me, help me understand. Help me understand why 1) [Hugo] Ekitike doesn’t start, 2 [he] takes Rio off leave, [Cody] Gakpo on, and 3) [He] takes [Jeremie] Frimpong off and then leaves Szoboszlai at RB…”

Replying to a fan, he added: “But if we [can see it], and I’m guessing most of the fans would agree, how can the man in charge not see this. There has to be s*** going on behind the scenes that we have no clue about, cos this is blasphemy.”

Slot gave his take on Liverpool’s latest adverse result and criticised his side for not managing to score a second goal and secure victory.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Dutchman said: “In the large parts of the game that we were the better team, I think that is a moment where you have to score the second. I think we had moments to do so quite a lot and in the part of the game where it was more equal – the last 15 to 20 minutes – on both sides, it was waiting for one of the two teams to score.

“They created the chances all in a similar way, the four or five moments they had: long ball, picking up the second ball and then try to be a threat in moments like that.

“We also picked up a lot of those second balls where we were able to counter-attack them, but from all these counter-attacks, all these four versus three, three versus two, all these moments that I felt with the quality players we have that we should be able to either get a bigger chance or when we have it, to score it, we didn't and then in the last minute we conceded the equaliser and then there's not a lot of time left to make up for it.”

Liverpool are back in action midweek as they welcome Galatasaray to Anfield for the second-leg of their Champions League last-16 matchup. The Reds have a 1-0 deficit to overcome following their defeat in Turkey. Their next Premier League game pits them against Brighton.
